Liverpool Suffer Injury Setback as Giovanni Leoni’s Return Is Delayed

Liverpool defender Giovanni Leoni is now expected to remain sidelined until the November international break, according to an update from Andoni Iraola.

The Reds travel to Brentford on Saturday for a Premier League encounter that could prove significantly more challenging than their Champions League clash against LASK during the week.

There had been optimism that Leoni would soon return to the matchday squad. However, Iraola has confirmed that the young Italian will need more time to recover from his serious knee injury, extending his lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Speaking about the defender’s condition, Iraola explained that the injury involved more than just damage to his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), with several other parts of his knee also affected.

He stressed that Leoni’s rehabilitation must be handled carefully to ensure the 19-year-old regains full confidence and returns in the best possible condition.

Iraola admitted that the recovery process has taken slightly longer than initially anticipated, although there has been no new setback. The current plan is for Leoni to begin his return during the next international break.

The Liverpool boss also provided updates on other players ahead of the Brentford fixture, explaining that their availability would depend on how they respond during the next training session.

He acknowledged that managing the squad has become increasingly difficult because of Liverpool’s demanding schedule, with matches coming thick and fast across different competitions.

With another Premier League fixture approaching, followed by a Champions League meeting with Villarreal just days later, squad rotation has become essential. Iraola emphasised that every available player will have an important role to play as the season progresses.

Leoni’s prolonged absence represents a significant disappointment for both the defender and Liverpool. The highly rated youngster made an impressive impression during his only appearance for the club against Southampton in last season’s Carabao Cup, showcasing why he is regarded as one of football’s most promising young centre-backs.

Despite the desire to see him return quickly, Liverpool must avoid rushing the Italian back into action. Allowing him sufficient time to recover fully will be crucial to reducing the risk of further complications.

The Reds currently have other defensive options available, meaning there is little need to place unnecessary pressure on the teenager to return immediately. A gradual reintegration into the squad would be the sensible approach once he is medically ready.

Although such a serious injury could potentially affect a young player’s development, Leoni’s age offers grounds for optimism that he can recover fully and eventually fulfil his considerable potential.
