Andy Robertson Opens Up on Liverpool’s Lost Premier League Titles to Man City

Andy Robertson has addressed Liverpool’s past battles with Manchester City and revealed his thoughts on the potential consequences of the club’s financial charges.

The Scotland captain spent several successful years at Liverpool, making almost 400 appearances and winning nine major trophies, including two Premier League titles. He later joined Tottenham during the summer.

However, Liverpool also endured several heartbreaking title races against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City. During Robertson’s time at Anfield, Liverpool finished runners-up to City in the Premier League in 2019 and 2022.

With a verdict on Manchester City’s alleged financial breaches reportedly approaching, discussions have intensified over what punishments the club could face if found guilty. Potential sanctions include fines, relegation and even the possibility of having certain trophies taken away.

Such a decision could potentially result in teams that finished second being retrospectively recognised as champions for some competitions.

Robertson, however, was keen to separate the players from the controversy surrounding the club.

Speaking while on international duty with Scotland, Robertson said he believed Manchester City’s players had proven themselves on the pitch.

«“For me, the players showed they were good enough on the pitch.»

«“I don’t know too much about the charges and stuff like that. But they had an incredible team, one that I loved battling against.»

«“I don’t think when it comes to these things that players are ever to blame. That’s all I can focus on.”»

Could Liverpool Receive More Premier League Titles?

Liverpool could potentially be affected by any retrospective changes to the Premier League record.

The 2013/14 campaign is also within the period being discussed. Liverpool finished second behind Manchester City after surrendering their advantage late in the season.

If titles were eventually reassigned, Liverpool could potentially be recognised as champions for that season — which would also mean club legend Steven Gerrard would retrospectively have a Premier League winners’ medal.

Manchester United could also be affected, with the 2011/12 and 2017/18 seasons among those that could potentially come under consideration.

Any retrospective changes would depend entirely on the final verdict and the punishments ultimately imposed.
