Trent Alexander-Arnold Could Make Shock Liverpool Return Next Summer

Trent Alexander-Arnold has reportedly emerged as a potential candidate for a sensational return to Liverpool next summer, with his current situation at Real Madrid raising questions over his long-term future in Spain.

According to reports relayed by Football Transfers, Liverpool are among several Premier League clubs monitoring the 27-year-old’s situation at the Bernabéu.

The England international has found regular playing time difficult to secure since José Mourinho took charge at Real Madrid, with summer signing Denzel Dumfries appearing to have moved ahead of him in the pecking order.

Alexander-Arnold’s Difficult Start in Madrid

Alexander-Arnold has featured in five of Real Madrid’s opening eight matches across all competitions, starting three of them. He has also remained an unused substitute on three occasions and has been deployed outside his usual position once.

Overall, he has played 292 minutes from a possible 720 so far this season.

Dumfries, meanwhile, has accumulated 505 minutes, suggesting that Mourinho currently prefers the Dutchman at right-back.

Although there is plenty of time for the situation to change, Alexander-Arnold’s declining involvement could become a concern if the pattern continues throughout the campaign.

Could Liverpool Bring Him Back?

A possible Liverpool return would come with several questions.

Would Real Madrid be willing to sell him in 2027? Would Liverpool be prepared to meet the asking price? And, most importantly, would Alexander-Arnold himself be interested in returning to Anfield after the controversial nature of his departure?

There would also be competition for the position, with Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong already part of Liverpool’s squad.

Despite those complications, Alexander-Arnold remains one of the most creative full-backs of his generation. During his Liverpool career, he played a major role in the club’s successful era under Jürgen Klopp and helped the Reds win two Premier League titles.

His numbers in La Liga this season also underline his attacking quality, particularly in areas such as chance creation, accurate long passes and crossing.

Liverpool’s Right-Back Situation

Liverpool could potentially need another right-back in one of the next two transfer windows, particularly if injuries continue to affect Bradley.

Frimpong has also yet to completely establish himself in the position, while Ronald Araújo has already been used there despite naturally playing elsewhere.

That could lead Liverpool to consider bringing in a more experienced option who can provide competition while allowing Bradley to develop without having his pathway blocked.

Alexander-Arnold would fit that profile from an experience standpoint, although the financial side of any potential deal could prove complicated.

Real Madrid reportedly paid around €10 million to secure his early release from Liverpool, while his wages would also be an important factor in any possible transfer.

For now, a return to Anfield remains only a possibility rather than an established transfer plan. However, if Alexander-Arnold continues to struggle for regular football in Madrid and Liverpool decide they need an experienced right-back, the circumstances could create an intriguing reunion next summer.
