Andy Robertson has revealed that his career could have taken a completely different direction because Everton made a bid for him when he was a teenager at Dundee United.

Robertson was playing for Dundee United in January 2014 when Everton, managed by Roberto Martínez, showed serious interest in the young left-back.

According to Robertson, Everton made a bid of around £750,000 for him. Their plan was to sign him and loan him back to Dundee United for six months. After that, he would return to Everton and initially provide competition for Leighton Baines, with the long-term aim of becoming the club’s first-choice left-back.

Robertson recalled the situation while appearing on Stick to Football, explaining that Martínez had personally travelled to watch him play for Dundee United.

However, the move never happened.

Robertson subsequently moved to Hull City in 2014, before Liverpool signed him in 2017 for an initial fee of around £8 million, potentially rising with add-ons.

His career at Anfield went on to become one of Liverpool’s most successful modern-era stories. He won major honours including the Premier League and Champions League, while establishing himself as one of the club’s key players during the Jurgen Klopp era.

The irony is that Everton had the opportunity to sign Robertson for £750,000, but the deal failed to materialise. Instead, he eventually became a Liverpool star and spent nine years at the club before leaving for Tottenham on a free transfer in 2026, according to the report.

The incredible what-if

Had Everton completed the deal, Robertson could have spent his peak years playing at Goodison Park rather than Anfield.

Instead, Liverpool eventually paid around £8m for him and got a player who would become an important part of their trophy-winning era.

In short: Everton reportedly tried to sign a teenage Andy Robertson for £750,000, but the move fell through. Liverpool later signed him for around £8m, and he went on to become a club legend.
