Record-breaking youngster seemed destined for Real Madrid until decisive Liverpool intervention

Liverpool reportedly beat Real Madrid to the signing of highly-rated Belgian goalkeeper Lucca Brughmans after making a decisive late move.

The 18-year-old had appeared destined for Madrid, where he was expected to follow in the footsteps of his idol Thibaut Courtois. However, Liverpool’s recruitment team sold him on a clear pathway to the first team.

The Reds agreed a deal with Genk that could rise to around £30m, with Brughmans remaining in Belgium before joining Liverpool next summer.

At 6ft 7in, the teenager is viewed as a potential long-term successor to Alisson, although he will face competition from Giorgi Mamardashvili.
