Sunderland were ‘cheated’ out of League Cup by Man City in 2014

Sunderland supporters left Wembley in 2014 believing they had witnessed a painful 3-1 Capital One Cup final defeat to Manchester City after Fabio Borini had put the Black Cats ahead.

However, Manchester City have since been found guilty of serious financial breaches, including allegations that they used “sham contracts” to artificially inflate revenues and reduce costs. The club contests the findings and has appealed.

That has raised questions over whether clubs affected by City’s alleged wrongdoing could receive retrospective recognition. Sunderland could potentially be awarded the 2014 League Cup, although doing so would never recreate the joy of lifting the trophy at Wembley.

The defeat also had wider consequences. Sunderland missed out on Europa League football and potentially the financial and sporting benefits that came with winning the competition. The club’s subsequent decline, including managerial turmoil, relegation and ownership problems, has led to renewed debate over what might have happened had Sunderland won that final.

For supporters, however, any retrospective trophy would come more than a decade too late to replace the Wembley moment they lost.
