Julian Ward’s remarkable Liverpool journey explained 🔴

Julian Ward joined Liverpool from Manchester City in 2012, initially working in scouting across Spain and Portugal before becoming Head of Loan Management and Club Partnerships in 2015.

He played a key role in developing Liverpool’s loan department, helping oversee successful spells for players such as Harvey Elliott, Harry Wilson, Ryan Kent and Rhian Brewster. He also helped arrange Liverpool’s 2019 friendly against Benfica, who recreated Tottenham’s style ahead of the Champions League final.

In 2020, Ward became Michael Edwards’ deputy and took on a bigger role in transfers and contract negotiations. He was heavily involved in the signings of Luis Díaz, Darwin Núñez, Calvin Ramsay and Fabio Carvalho, as well as Cody Gakpo’s January 2023 move. He also played a major role in contract renewals for Mohamed Salah and Diogo Jota.

Ward briefly succeeded Edwards as sporting director before leaving Liverpool in 2023, but his groundwork helped shape the summer transfer plans. He also helped set up the ÂŁ35m deal for Alexis Mac Allister.

In 2024, Ward returned to FSG as Technical Director of Football, focusing on Liverpool’s academy, elite-player development and the club’s global young-talent pipeline.

His influence behind the scenes has been huge. 🔴👏
