Former Liverpool captain Phil Thompson has praised Florian Wirtz following the German midfielder’s impressive performance in Liverpool’s 6-3 Champions League victory over LASK.
The Reds bounced back from their disappointing defeat to Manchester City with an entertaining display in Austria on Wednesday night. While Bradley Barcola stole the headlines by scoring a hat-trick, Wirtz also delivered an encouraging performance that attracted plenty of positive attention.
Wirtz had faced criticism following Liverpool’s recent struggles, with questions being raised about his performances and whether he deserved to retain his place in the starting lineup. However, his display against LASK offered a timely reminder of the quality he can bring to the team.
Phil Thompson Delivers His Verdict on Wirtz
Thompson was particularly impressed with Wirtz’s performance, describing the German international’s display as sensational.
The former Liverpool defender believes the midfielder showed the creativity, intelligence and technical ability that make him such an exciting player.
Wirtz was influential in Liverpool’s attacking play, finding spaces between the opposition’s defensive lines and creating opportunities for his teammates. His vision and ability to deliver precise passes helped the Reds cause problems for LASK throughout the match.
One of his most important contributions came when he produced an excellent through ball to set up Barcola’s second goal of the evening.
The pass demonstrated Wirtz’s ability to recognise openings quickly and deliver the ball with the accuracy required to punish an opposing defence.
For a player who had recently been under scrutiny, it was an encouraging response.
Wirtz and Barcola Combine Brilliantly
Liverpool’s attacking quality was evident from the opening stages, with Wirtz playing an important role in the team’s attacking movements.
After Ronald Araújo opened the scoring, Barcola doubled Liverpool’s advantage before adding another goal following Wirtz’s perfectly timed pass.
The German midfielder’s contribution highlighted the creative qualities Liverpool hoped to see when they brought him to the club.
Barcola eventually completed his hat-trick, while Araújo, Jeremie Frimpong and Lewis Koumas also found the net in a memorable European encounter.
Although Barcola deservedly received significant attention for his finishing, Wirtz’s performance demonstrated how his creativity could help Liverpool get the best out of their attacking players.
A Timely Response to Recent Criticism
The performance was particularly important for Wirtz after the criticism that followed Liverpool’s defeat to Manchester City.
The German has been expected to make a significant impact, and the pressure surrounding his performances has grown whenever the team has struggled.
However, his display against LASK provided encouraging signs that he is beginning to find his rhythm.
His movement, passing and ability to operate between the lines gave Liverpool another dimension in attack. Rather than simply moving the ball sideways, he regularly looked for opportunities to break through the opposition’s defensive structure.
These qualities could become increasingly important as Liverpool continue to develop their attacking combinations.
Wirtz will still need to produce consistent performances, but his showing in Austria offered reasons for optimism.
Liverpool Secure Victory Despite Defensive Concerns
Despite Liverpool’s impressive attacking display, the match was not entirely straightforward.
The Reds established a commanding advantage, but defensive lapses allowed LASK to score three times and make the final stages more uncomfortable than expected.
Liverpool’s attacking players had already done enough to secure the victory, yet conceding so many goals will give the coaching staff areas to address.
Nevertheless, the result represented a positive response following the defeat to Manchester City.
The victory also provided opportunities for several players to rebuild their confidence, with Barcola enjoying a particularly memorable night after scoring his first goals for Liverpool.
Wirtz Has an Opportunity to Build Momentum
Thompson’s praise will provide further encouragement for Wirtz as he looks to establish himself as a key figure in Liverpool’s team.
The midfielder possesses the technical quality and creativity to influence matches, but maintaining that level of performance will be crucial.
His connection with Barcola was one of the notable positives from the victory, while his movement and passing helped Liverpool create numerous opportunities.
Liverpool supporters will now hope that Wirtz can carry this confidence into their upcoming fixtures and deliver more performances that demonstrate why the club invested so heavily in his talent.
Ultimately, the 6-3 win over LASK was an important result for Liverpool, and Wirtz’s impressive display gave supporters another reason to be optimistic about his contribution to the team.
