The UAE has reportedly warned the UK Government that billions of pounds in planned investment could be cancelled following Manchester City’s guilty verdict over financial-rule breaches.
Reports claim Emirati officials said the Premier League’s actions could affect relations between the two countries, while City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak has also held talks with senior UK ministers.
The controversy has also sparked criticism of Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham for defending City’s owners and their contribution to the city.
City were found guilty of financial breaches dating from 2009-10 to 2017-18, with an independent commission ruling that some sponsorship deals were used to disguise funding from their Abu Dhabi ownership.
